And on his farm he had a Goose, E-I-E-I-O….

Okay this story is about my farm stay at New Zealand near Lake Taupo.

Due to the stormy season all motels along the way were fully booked and thus I had to find whatever that was available. It was my third backpacking trip with my cousins and it was not really heading off to a good start. Anyway being desperate that we were we saw a B&B at a farm near there that had the Magically Lit Sign Vacany.It was like a sign from god, a miracle at 3 am in the morning.

So we checked in and stayed at the farm. We were introduced to the owner there and true enough his name was Macdonalds. I burst out laughing as the nursery rhyme was running through my mind as I saw all the haystacks and the animals, hearing his name just completed the song.

My cousins were too tired so they went off to sleep but I was wide-awake. Cold but wide awake. Thus I decided to warm myself at the fireplace. I love fireplaces as we hardly see them or use them in Singapore. Its just one of those things you should experience like snow. Alas, aren’t I a rather deprived child? Seeing Delight in fireplaces and snow. Oh well, moving on I was nicely settled down in front of the fireplace with my warm glass of milk provided by Daisy the Cow. Strangely all names in the farm seem to be some character name…. leaving me rather bewildered whether if its reality or a dream at times.

I managed to snooze a while but was awaken by sudden cackles. Loud ones like the chimes of clock. I looked around in my drowsy sleepy state and the only thing I saw was a goose that was on the mantelpiece onto of the fireplace. I was annoyed by the sound and so decided to shut it up. Thus in my sleepy and spectacles-less state I went to shut the darn thing up by trying to pull down its beak, as there was another clock on the front counter that was a hen and it was shut up the same way.

Thus I did the same and to my surprise it wouldn’t yank down but instead felt wet and real. I think it took my brain a while to process the fact that, it was a real goose. However by then, the goose started flapping its wings wildly and pecked my nose, sending me howling away and running around in the middle of the night or should I say 6 am in the morning, just as the Rooster started to greet the new day.

What a nice way to be awaken huh?

Have you ever met a Goose that thinks its human? No? Well let me tell you about one I met.

Charlie was the name of the goose that I met on the farm during my B&B stay in New Zealand.

He was a rather vain but small goose. He was as white as snow with a black spot near his back. If it wasn’t for his name I would have thought he was Mother goose as he wears clothes.

Can you believe that? A goose wearing clothes.

Charlie always wore this strange vest like thing that Mrs. McDonalds sewed for him. Though they looked old and patched, as materials used are leftovers from curtains or sofa covers, they were really cute to look at, especially when Charlie waddled around the farm in his outfit.
Despite its cuteness, I was not fond of that thing.

It thought it was a rooster by nature like how babe (From babe in the city) thought it was a dog. Thus it woke me up every morning at the crack of dawn, throughout my stay there. He cackled even before the rooster did, why he did that was beyond me.

Another strange characteristic about this thing would be its ability to do somersaults. When fish is thrown at it as part of its lunch, it does somersaults as it catches them one by one before gobbling them down.

Thus if you ever want to see a rather strange Goose that wears clothes and does somersaults head down to Lake Taupo now.
