    The Mission

He jerks awake from his slumber as he hears a scream. It is time, he thinks to himself. He hurriedly wears his cloak and rushes to the church tower. The wind howls as he smashes open the door. He looks up and sees the flight of spiral stairs eerily lit by the moonlight, awaiting him. Sweat drips down his face as he hesitates for a moment. He hears the scream once again but this time it was in a shrill voice. Without any more thought, he dashes up the long flight of stairs. He pauses mid-way to catch his breath. With pure determination, he dashes up the remaining stairs. At the end of those stairs he sees the mahogany door.

It is exactly what he had read. He recalls the letter he had read just hours ago. It had stated that tonight he will hear an unusual sound. Little did he think that it would be a scream. It stated that he has to rush up to the church tower where at the end of the stairs he will see the mahogany door. What he needs to know to continue on his mission will be given to him at the right time. It was also written that this had to be done by him in his best interest. Author unknown.

He shakes his head to clear his mind and focus on the present instead.

He reaches out and turns the knob of the door. It just would not budge. There is no visible lock, yet it is locked. He stares at the mahogany door intently, trying to figure out a way to unlock it.

Suddenly the door gives a light rattle. A paper gets slid through the gap of the door. In it is a riddle to unlock the door. The handwriting is the same as the first one he had received. His mission now seems like some sort of game to someone. He pounds his fist in anger at the door, demanding for an explanation. Footsteps’ running towards the distant is all he got as a reply.

He stares at the riddle and looks around for an answer. What walks on four legs in the morning? Two legs in the afternoon and three legs at night?

“Think David think!” he mutters to himself, as he paces around the small space available to him.

Hmm… a baby crawls on all four and then an adult walk on two.The third must be with a walking stick.

“A human! The answer is a human.” he shouts.

Just then the door clicks and unlocks itself. The door opens slowly.

David walks into the darkness and switches on the lamp to find his uncle Charlie sitting in the chair smoking a pipe, with Steves his butler, standing beside him.

Seeing David, uncle Charlie shouts” Everyone! he is here” and he pulls open the curtain behind him to reveal David’s family and friends standing there with a birthday cake and lots of presents. David had forgotten that today is his twenty-first birthday and that his uncle had promised him to throw him one that he will never forget.

This is surely one birthday that he will remember years to come.

I felt shades of ‘Vertigo’ come over me as I read this. I hate twists…but this one was ok.
